"Can You Hear Me Knocking?"

An international symposium on sound in art

24 May 2019, 10 am to 6 pm

The current art-theoretical discourse on Sound Art is strongly determined by two viewpoints. Firstly, by the view championed by John Cage and the New York School, which is encapsulated by the phrase “Let the sounds be themselves”. Secondly, by the fact that attention is strongly oriented towards the material nature of sound and towards the production of sound objects. In contrast to this, Christian Jendreiko follows an approach whereby sound in art is considered less of a standalone object and more of a medium in which humans appear along with their aesthetic actions. On the basis of this artistic position, the symposium “Can You Hear Me Knocking” aims to develop alternative discursive perspectives on sound art. At the same time, it is meant to further the aspiration to make sound art tangible in its development from the very beginning, placing the focus on the growing role of the museum for its presentation and preservation.
