Research in a museum combines curatorial endeavour and work on the history of the collection with questions on the theory and practice of this institution. A museum’s operations, its collecting and exhibiting activities provide an empirical platform for both scholarly and experimental research approaches and projects which, in particular, place the focus on the future of the museum: a museum’s “mission” in a changing society, how holdings should be treated and collections advanced, the role of the museum as a player in the art business, not to mention the economic and general (cultural) political conditions in which it operates.
Museum Folkwang welcomes opportunities to exchange views and is open to collaborative research projects. Simultaneously, it creates its own formats designed to develop the museum as a forum for international interaction between those engaged in the cultural sector and researchers.
