In summer 2020 Museum Folkwang is re-opening its basement level as a permanent exhibition venue for photography. The changing exhibitions will feature new acquisitions, placed in an active and multifaceted dialogue with works and groups of works from the Photographic Collection’s holdings.
Acquired in 2019, Soham Gupta’s 20-part series of images entitled Angst is going on show for the very first time. Gupta’s nocturnal encounters with his protagonists present a real and surreal world. In the glaring beam of the camera flash and against the dark background of his home native city of Kolkata a story unravels that is as poetic as it is political, and, depending on your perspective and reading of it can be considered documentation and fiction.
