New in the collection: Tabaimo – Flower in the shadow, 2021

The FILMBOX in the foyer of the museum is now showing Tabaimo's new acquisition with free access during opening hours.

Inspired by the Japanese theatre masks in the collection of Museum Folkwang, in 2021, multimedia artist Tabaimo developed the video installation "flower in the shadow" for Essen. In her works, she deals intensively with the symbols of Japanese culture; in "flower in the shadow" with the history, visual language and props of theatre. Starting point is the seminal theory "Fushikaden", which the performing artist Zeami published on the theatre during the 15th century. Zeami sees the flower as a metaphor for the demanding, physical performance of a performance as well as for the theatre experience of the male actor and his audience.

The installation, which has already been shown in the anniversary exhibition Renoir, Monet, Gauguin – Images of a Floating World (February to May 2022), has now been acquired permanently for the Museum Folkwang collection with funds from the Folkwang-Museumsverein e.V.
