Since the end of 2020 it has been possible to search through the comprehensive holdings of the museum.
The holdings from all five collections of the museum and that of the Museum Folkwang Foundation can be viewed online. There are various ways of searching in the Online Collection:
Using the FULL TEXT SEARCH function you can search for artists or keywords. This is useful for searches that cross various collections and can reveal exciting discoveries.
An ADVANCED SEARCH offers more specific options, for example searches for pieces by a certain artist in specific collections, for periods, art forms, exhibited works and so on.
In addition, there are ALBUMS – these are compiled by our curators on special topics or focal points and combine a number of collections or art forms. There is a special focus on the new presentation of the collection entitled NEW WORLDS which since mid-2019 has represented the museum’s new approach to presentation: Each room is grouped around a thematic anchor piece while exhibits from different media and epochs are juxtaposed to create surprising connections and new perspectives.
The Online Collection reflects the museum’s daily work: Corrections and additions to the sets of data or illustrations are directly incorporated into the Online Collection. This is an ongoing process that will take years.
