Folkwang-Museumsverein e.V.

The important Museum Folkwang collection belongs to the City of Essen and Folkwang-Museumsverein e.V. in equal parts. The history of the latter began in 1922 when a contract of cooperation was signed between the municipality and private partners, one still valid today, ensuring the museum’s continued development. The collaboration between the City, Museum Folkwang, and Folkwang-Museumsverein essentially occurs through the Kuratorium, or Board of Trustees. Every year, the chair of Board of Trustees alternates between the Lord Mayor of the City of Essen, and the Chairperson of the Board of the Folkwang-Museumsverein. Amongst other things, the Board of Trustees takes decisions on requests of loans of artworks and on hiring of curatorial staff. Folkwang-Museumsverein offers its members and interested parties the chance to attend exclusive previews on exhibitions in the museum, free admission to all special exhibitions in the museum, exclusive art excursions and trips to significant museums and private collections, participation in the annual reception at which the International Folkwang Prize is awarded (every two years) and much more besides.
