The important Museum Folkwang collection belongs to the City of Essen and Folkwang-Museumsverein e.V. in equal parts. The history of the latter began in 1922 when a contract of cooperation was signed between the municipality and private partners, one still valid today, ensuring the museum’s continued development.

The Kunstring Folkwang e.V., founded in 1901 initially as a museum association, has since 1924 worked exclusively in the communication of art in the Museum Folkwang Essen. Through its rich educational program (guided tours, courses, publications etc.) it aims especially to inform and educate the general public about the art collections and temporary exhibitions of the Museum Folkwang. Through lectures, excursions and the edition of objects for sale, it aims to increase understanding of all aspects of art. 

The Junge Kunstring Folkwang sees itself as a young and inclusive group of the Kunstring Folkwang that is interested in art and culture at the Museum Folkwang and the surrounding area. The Folkwang Young Art Ring offers various formats and information on events that take place inside and outside the museum.

The Förderverein der Fotografischen Sammlung im Museum Folkwang e.V. was founded in 1999 and has been committed to promoting current photographic practice ever since. In addition to free admission to the special exhibitions, we offer you exclusive events and, in co-operation with the team of the Photographic Collection, insights into the museum's extensive holdings. Our popular members' trip, visits to exhibitions and studios and the guest lecture at the annual members' meeting offer you many opportunities to get to know the work of international artists and photographers up close.

The Stiftung für das Museum Folkwang is an independent foundation under civil law. It uses the revenue from its assets as well as from endowments and donations to acquire works of fine art and in doing so enables Museum Folkwang to expand its unique collection – even at times when there is not much public funding. The Foundation assigns the works it owns on permanent loan to Museum Folkwang.
