Opening: Kate Newby – New Commission

The internationally renowned artist Kate Newby (b. 1979) creates works that respond to specific places and situations. For the Museum Folkwang, she has created a temporary installation that is closely intertwined with the museum’s architecture whilst simultaneously introducing an element of resistance. Glass and concrete, the fundamental building materials of modernism, become fragile, malleable materials in Newby’s hands, upon which she literally leaves her mark. Fingerprints and notches can be found on the building’s glass panes and on semi-cylindrical lines that winds its way through the courtyard, connecting the museum’s old building with the new one. Newby subtly sharpens our perception of the unspectacular and creates poetic reflections on what we have seen many times before and yet perhaps overlooked.
