6 ½ Weeks – Vivian Caccuri
Sound is the starting point of Vivian Caccuri's (*1986 in São Paulo) artistic exploration. In the expansive installation Phantom Dust (2018) on show at Museum Folkwang, she processes sound recordingsfrom the Carlsbad Caves in New Mexico: Reverberation and echo of current Mexican hits mix with sounds from nature and the whispers and footsteps of the people recording. Added to this are the whispers and footsteps of the people recording. The sound meets a textile work installed diagonally in the room, which captures the warm light coming from above as a permeable net. Geometric shapes on the textile surface structure the wide format and are reminiscent of loudspeakers of different sizes.
Phantom Dust reflects Vivian Caccuri's interest in sounds and their meaning. The ephemerality hinted at in the title in phantom and dust and the contrast between presence and absence play an important role: the disembodied but voluminous sound meets the incessantly moving, shimmering textile work. Caccuri sees the recognisability of familiar noises, sounds or forms as an opportunity for viewers to connect, discuss and deconstruct. Phantom Dust is typical of Vivian Caccuri's interdisciplinary oeuvre, which resolutely opposes the marginalisation of sound in contemporary art. Her interest in the social and cultural influence of sound also characterises her other fields of activity. In addition to her artistic work, the artist organises parties in her studio and whenever she gets the chance she plays as a DJ at events organised by herself or by institutions.
Vivian Caccuri graduated in Fine Arts in 2007 at the University of São Paulo and in Sound Studies at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2007 and has lived and worked there ever since. In 2022 she was represented with exhibitions at Kunsthal 44Møen (Denmark) and presented her works together with Miles Greenberg at the New Museum (New York, USA). She participated in the Bienal do Mercosul (2018 and 2022, Porto Alegre, Brazil), High Line Art (2020, New York, USA) and exhibited her artworks at the Serpentine Galleries (2019, London, UK), among others. Vivian Caccuri. Phantom Dust is her first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
