Museum Folkwang Collection Project

In connection with creating an office for provenance research, since 20126 Museum Folkwang has conducted systematic research into the origin of items in the collection. Painting, sculptures and prints are examined but also objects from Africa, the Arab world, Asia, and South America that form the basis of the collection.

INVENTORY PROJECT COVERING ACQUISITIONS MADE BETWEEN 1933 AND 1970

Duration: 1 October 2019–30 September 2020

From 2019 to 2020 a project supported by the German Lost Art Foundation in Magdeburg on the provenance research of the paintings and sculptures that found their way into the museum during the Nazi period (1933−1945) and the post-war years (1946−1970) yielded further findings and results. The results have been published in the Collection Online. 

INVENTORY PROJECT COVERING ACQUISITIONS MADE BETWEEN 1971 AND 2004

Duration: 1 October 2023–30 September 2025

Since October 2023, the provenance of acquisitions and donations made between 1971 and 2004 to the Collection of Paintings and Sculptures has been researched as part of a follow-up project funded by the German Centre for Lost Cultural Property. The results are published in the Collection Online and are thus accessible to the public. The section on provenance research in the collection display illustrates the methodology used in provenance research using selected works as examples.
