Back on display: Marc Bauer – Der Sammler – Nachbilder

The Museum Folkwang collection was expanded in 2014 to include this important work, which is now on display once again.

Marc Bauer's medium of choice is drawing, in particular murals. The starting point for his oeuvre is photographs, which he analyses by means of drawings. Moreover, he uses the ephemeral and vulnerable medium of wall-sized charcoal drawings to introduce a temporal dimension into the images, something that is missing from the arrested time in photography. Bauer's topics of choice include the relationship between masculinity and fascism as well as the interconnection points between his own family history and world history.
As is the case with other dictatorial regimes, the Nazis also considered it important to control the production of images and their dissemination. It is therefore no coincidence that to date there have been no photographs of the 1937 seizure of »degenerate art« from public collections. Nevertheless, Marc Bauer manages all the same to convey the oppressive atmosphere of this action, its strategy driven by despotism and greed, together with the Nazis' notion of art, with its racist and ideological roots.

SAVE THE DATE: On Friday, 14 November, at 6 p.m., there will be an artist talk with artist Marc Bauer and curator Mathilde Heitmann-Taillefer.
